Year 1: Somer & Frome

Welcome to our Year 1 page.

Miss McAvoy (Somer) and Miss Ryan (Frome) are your class teachers.  Mrs Mason and Miss King are also Year 1 staff members.
Introduction to Year One meeting
On Thursday 30th September we are holding an information evening, straight after school pickup.
This will be an opportunity for us to share lots of information with you, including our timetables, topics, and daily routines.  We will also discuss how you can support your child's learning at home.
It would be great to see you at the meeting, however, if you are unable to make it, we will put a copy of the Powerpoint shared at the meeting on here.
Change to Timetables
Please note that from 18th October, the timetables for both classes will change.  This means that we will have PE on a TUESDAY rather than on a Wednesday. Many thanks.
Daily routines
Please ensure that your child brings in the following each day:
  • Water bottle
  • Book bag, containing reading books, phonics folder, reading log, spelling folder and communication book
  • A coat

We check communication books each day, so please do feel free to write comments in there.  We may also pop a note in there for you, so please make sure that you check them as well!
Please could your child bring in their PE kit on a Monday and we will then send it home on a Friday. PE days are usually Tuesday and Friday but on other days we may undertake activities such as 'Move a Mile' so it's useful to have PE kit in school every day. Thank you.
Maths at home
During term 1 and 2, we will be focusing on number bonds to 10.
Below is a link for 'Hit the button' which is a really good website for lots of short Maths games. After half-term we will be sending home number bonds to 10 for your child to revise. As with the reading, short but regular sessions are best to support learning.
Term 1 and 2 Topic
Our topic for the first two terms is going to be 'What a wonderful world'. Please see below for more information.
We are going to be focusing on cold places first - the Arctic and Antarctic. We will then be heading to warmer climates! Check back soon to find out what we have been learning about.
Trips for this year
You should have received a letter outlining our plans for trips this year. We intend to go on 3 trips.
Trip 1 - Noah's Ark Zoo farm (Tuesday 12th October)
Trip 2 - We the Curious (Wednesday 2nd March)
Trip 3 - SS Great Britain (Thursday 16th June)

Parents events
Wednesday 10th November (am)
Wednesday 16th March (am)
Thursday 30th June (pm)
If you have any questions, please do contact us. Many thanks.
Family events
We are planning to run some sessions to allow you to come into school and work with your child.  We will let you know the dates of these as soon as we have confirmed them.
Spellings
Please practise spellings with your child each day.  They will have a test on a friday morning and will receive new spellings each friday.  Please ensure that they have their spelling folder in their book bag each day.
Reading at home
Please could you aim to read daily with your child. Short, regular reading sessions will really support their learning.
To support your child's reading at home, you may find the Oxford Owl website useful. You can register for a free online account. Once you have an account you are able to search for and select books to read. These are similar to books we read in school so you should be able to select the correct level. If you have any problems, let us know and we can help.
Year 1 Common exception words
We will be looking at the Year 1 common exception words over the coming weeks.  It would be really helpful if you could practice these words with your child.  Please encourage them to both read and write them. Below is a link to the words.
